Dr. Richard Kevin focuses on individual and couples psychotherapy with a particular interest in the impact of trauma and addictions on clients and their families. Dr. Kevin has been a psychologist for more than 30 years in academic and community settings. He is a native of Wisconsin who has lived in Raleigh, NC since 1986. After college at the University of Notre Dame, he began his graduate training in the field of learning and language. During this time, he taught troubled adolescents, who helped him discover his passion: helping others deal with the everyday and extraordinary challenges of their lives. After completing his training in Counseling Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Kevin began his practice at the Student Health Center of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he also taught graduate courses. He developed a concern for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as Vietnam veterans with disturbing and puzzling symptoms began returning to college. He has continued this work with PTSD survivors, including victims of PTSD from often overlooked civilian incidents such as motor vehicle and work place accidents. As coordinator of psychological services at the Wake County Alcoholism Treatment Center, Dr. Kevin worked intensively with the full gamut of addictions and their toll upon families. He continues to serve clients and families dealing with chemical and behavioral addictions including Internet sexual compulsions. Dr. Kevin has a long term interest in understanding the psychology of men and how men and women differ in expressing feelings and coping with conflict and tension in relationships. He has conducted experiential workshops on understanding and appreciating gender differences in handling conflict. He is the proud father of two adult children.
